Coverage Calculator

To determine how much Extra Muscle Prepaint Cleaner will be needed for a specific cleaning job, use the following guide:

Calculate the total area to be cleaned by multiplying the length by height
Length  X  Height  =  Total Square Footage
________   X   ________   =    ________

To determine the approximate gallons of Extra Muscle Prepaint Cleaner required:

  1. Select Light, Medium or Heavy Duty from the chart (below) based on soil conditions.
  2. Find the Square Feet of Coverage closest to the Total Surface Area in Square Feet to be cleaned.
  3. Use the number in the "Gallons of Concentrate" column for the number of gallons needed to clean a flat, smooth surface using a low pressure spray applicator.

Note: For rough, porous or corrugated surfaces, multiply gallons X 1.2.

For high pressure spray application multiply gallons X 1.3.

Field Experience

  • Machine Tool Manufacturer - Prepaint cleaning of used machinery
Restrictions - Eliminated the use of lacquer thinner and 1,1,1, trichloroethylene
Soil conditions - Heavy deposits of chips, fines, coolants, lubricants and oils
Concentration - 10 oz. of Extra Muscle Prepaint Cleaner per gallon of water
Procedure - 10 oz. of Extra Muscle Prepaint Cleaner per gallon of water
  • Diesel Truck Garage - Prepaint cleaning of painted block walls and decking
Restrictions - Use of flammable solvents prohibited
Soil conditions - Heavy coating of diesel exhaust on decking. Shop soils on walls.
Concentration - 5 oz. of Extra Muscle Prepaint Cleaner per gallon of water
Procedure - Applied solution using a hand-pump, tank-type garden sprayer. Allowed 5 to 10 minutes contact time depending on soil conditions and high-pressure rinsed using a pressure washer.

  • Paper Mill - Prepaint cleaning of paper machine during annual shutdown
Restrictions - Health and safety concerns regarding the planned use of ammonia for neutralization
Soil conditions - Varying concentrations of grease, oil, and paper dust
Concentration - Varied from 5 oz. to 20 oz. per gallon of water based on soil conditions
Procedure - The contaminated deck areas were thoroughly sprayed using a mixture of 10 oz. of No Rinse Prepaint Cleaner per gallon of water. After 15 minutes contact time, the treated areas were blown dry using oil-free, compressed air. When dry, pH tests were conducted to confirm that the acid had been neutralized before painting.
  • Textile Mill - Prepaint cleaning of oil-stained concrete roof decking
Restrictions - Short cleaning time required, pressure washer use allowed
Soil conditions - Heavy oil contamination of uncoated concrete
Concentration - 10:1 using pressure washer detergent injector
Procedure - Applied solution with pressure washer to 30' x 30' sections, after 10 minutes contact time rinsed the surface using a hot water pressure washer.
  • Wood Deck - Removal of solid, latex stain and ground-in dirt
Restrictions - Prevention of damage to adjacent vegetation
Soil conditions - Deteriorating solid color stain, dirt
    Concentration - Undiluted
Procedure - Work was conducted at 80°F with the deck in direct sunlight. Undiluted solution was applied over the entire deck surface insuring thorough wetting. After 20 minute contact time, the surface was scrubbed using a stiff-bristled push broom then rinsed with a pressure washer using a 25° wand tip. The elevated temperature of the deck surface accelerated penetration of the Extra Muscle Prepaint Cleaner through the stain. Extra Muscle Prepaint Cleaner is safe for use around vegetation.

Research

A. United States Department of Agriculture
Extra Muscle Prepaint Cleaner has been accepted with an A-1 category designation as a general cleaning agent on all surfaces or for use with steam or mechanical cleaning devices in all departments of USDA inspected facilities. Regulations require a potable water rinse following cleaning.

B. Independent Laboratory Testing
Extra Muscle Prepaint Cleaner has been tested for cleaning effectiveness and coating compatibility by an independent testing laboratory. The testing protocol and results are detailed below.

Scoring
Inasmuch as some observations were subjective, they have been rated using the following ASTM Standardized Scoring System:

Test
Adhesion to Steel
Procedure
ASTM D 3359
The bottom half of five - 4" x 8" steel panels were immersed in Extra Muscle Prepaint Cleaner, removed and air dried for 24 hours. Each panel was then entirely coated with one of the following coatings and dried at 77°F for seven days. The immersed and unimmersed areas of each panel were then tested for coating adhesion.

Stain Removal
12" x 12" pieces of white fabric were stained with coffee, lipstick and cola. The stains were dried for 24 hours and the fabric was soaked for 15 minutes in Extra Muscle Prepaint Cleaner. After soaking, the fabric was removed and brushed with a stiff bristle brush for 25 cycles and evaluated for the degree of stain removal.

Removal of Paint and Stain from Wood
A semi-gloss interior latex paint and a solid color oil-based stain were applied to pine panels and dried for 48 hours. Sponges were soaked in the Extra Muscle Prepaint Cleaner and placed in contact with each coating for 10 minutes. The sponges were removed and each area was scrubbed with a stiff bristle brush for 20 cycles to determine removal properties.
